6 Ways To Prepare Before Your Reiki Session

Anytime you go for a medical treatment, you want to make sure you’re prepped for the experience. Reiki sessions are no different. In fact, being fully prepared for the appointment can even help increase the efficacy of your reiki treatment. If you’re wondering, “How do I prepare for a reiki appointment?” keep reading below!

What Happens At A Reiki Appointment?

The best way you can be prepared for your reiki session is to understand what the practice is like before you begin. Each session will be a little different depending on your reiki practitioner and what physical or emotional issues you’ll be working on healing during the appointment. Each session can last anywhere from 20 to 90 minutes.

You’ll be asked to lay down on a treatment table or mat. Typically, practitioners like to cover the person with a blanket and soft music might be playing to help create a soothing environment. Then they’ll move their hands around your body, either hovering right above your body or lightly touching you. You might feel some heat or tingling in your body – this is the practitioner working with the energy in your system.

Each appointment should end with the practitioner asking you what was helpful or if anything made you feel uncomfortable so that they can make adjustments before your next session. It’s also important that you’re talking about your goals for the treatment with them so that they know what to focus on. How many sessions you might need and how often they should be repeated depends on your specific healing goals and what your practitioner recommends.

What Are Some Ways To Prepare Before Your Reiki Session?

Reiki sessions do require a little bit of preparation beforehand so that you can ensure your treatment will be successful. If you put some effort into being in the right headspace, your healing can be even more effective.

1. Put Together A List Of Your Concerns/Goals For The Treatment

It’s crucial that you understand exactly why you’re seeking reiki treatment. If you’re experiencing a physical or emotional issue, your practitioner should know ahead of time so they can target those areas for healing.

If you have goals (like wanting to feel calmer or hoping to achieve more balance), let your practitioner know before you begin.

2. Wear Comfortable Clothing

You’ll want to be as comfortable as possible during your reiki session for optimal healing. So, what do you wear to a reiki session? Loose, breathable clothes are the best option so that you’re not feeling restricted while you’re laying down.

Some practitioners recommend wearing socks since your feet can get cold if you’re asked to remove your shoes (socks might need to be removed as well for some treatments). Just make sure that whatever you’re wearing is something you’ll be comfy in for the duration of your session.

3. Eat And Hydrate A Few Hours Before

You’ll want to eat and hydrate at least a few hours before your session (so that you’re nourished but won’t feel too full during the appointment). What should you not do before reiki? Eating a huge or heavy meal will only make you uncomfortable while you’re lying down.

Some practitioners will also recommend skipping caffeine, sugar, or alcohol before your session, as these things can make you jittery or tense and can impede the healing process.

4. Get Your Body Prepared By Using The Restroom

Make sure to use the restroom before your session so that you don’t have to stop for any reason once the treatment has begun.

5. Spend Some Time Centering Yourself And Focusing On The Session

In order for your reiki treatment to be as successful as possible, you’ll want to be in the right frame of mind. Spend some time centering yourself by meditating or doing some gentle yoga poses. This can help you feel more grounded and ready to receive healing energy. This is also a good time to remind yourself of your own personal goals for the session. By focusing on your intentions, you can remind your system what you’re hoping to achieve.

6. Turn Off All Devices And Remove Any Distractions

Your last step before your session should be to turn off all of your devices (don’t even put them on vibrate - the sound could still be disturbing during your session). Remove any other distractions from the space so that you can be fully focused on receiving the healing treatment.

As long as you’re feeling comfortable and safe with your practitioner, your reiki session will be a success. After your session is over, make sure to talk with your practitioner about any concerns or anything you’re experiencing so that they’re aware of how you’re doing. Then, spend at least 15-20 minutes integrating your experience (this can be by meditating, taking a walk, sitting quietly and reflecting on your thoughts, etc.). Don’t forget to drink plenty of water after your session too!
